About Me
A creative upbringing sparked a passion in me from an early age. Since I was a child, I always loved to create. I just cannot stop making things.
My mother’s was a varied artist and it resulted in a life filled with artistic objects. Dress design, paintings, pottery, ikebana, exhibitions and events relating to this surrounded our lives ever since I can remember.
From day one, I just loved the tactile quality of clay and I often found myself lost in the creative zone for long periods of time.
Making one-of-a-kind bowls large or small, vases, ring dishes, delicate multi functional vessels, platters, trays, mugs and figurines.
Each delicate ceramic vessel is lovingly handcrafted in my home studio in Redwood Valley, Tasman. From building the form in clay, playing with the textures and form to applying the underglaze and beautiful glazes. I love the whole process, the transformation that happens after the firing is magical and exciting. I enjoy watching something so soft flow into my idea though creativity and become a hard object that lasts for a very long time. That fascinates me.
Clay is a very responsive material. I love making marks, creating patterns, adding texture and layers to the surface on the clay. I love how I can preserve what I do to the clay. I do both hand building and wheel throwing. Hand building comes naturally to me. I struggled with wheel throwing but love the meditative quality of the process.
Sometimes my mind wanders off and I think to myself if this survives the journey ahead and makes it to the final object, someone will be using this piece of mud to enjoy visually in their home or a mug that they'll be able to drink their coffee from!
I enjoy gardening and taking walks in nature. It seems to make sense that my art is always derived from the natural world. Picking up leaves, flowers, pods and shells and really taking a close look at the natural object is great fun and inspiring. You can find so many repetitions, patterns, and order in nature's design.
There is also so much left to learn about the subject which is wonderful. I’m discovering it piece by piece. Each time I try something for the first time the results always leads me somewhere new. I feel like I am on a continuous exciting journey of discovery.
I spent my childhood in Zimbabwe and lived in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Singapore, Australia and settled in New Zealand 11 years ago. The beautiful and peaceful Tasman region is now home and it is wonderful to be here settled with my supportive husband Gavin, family, friends and our two miniature schnauzers Tiny and Tara.
